About the Role
Our client is seeking an Engineering Director to lead their merchant-facing engineering teams responsible for APIs, payment pages, portals, configuration interfaces, and more. This is a business-oriented leadership role focused on driving outcomes, creating value, and fostering collaboration between engineering and product teams. In this role, you will be instrumental in coaching first-level engineering managers and ensuring the team is aligned with broader business goals.


Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership:
    Lead an engineering organization of approximately 40+ individuals, managing and mentoring engineering managers while fostering their professional growth.

  • Product Partnership:
    Collaborate with product managers to build high-performing, product-led delivery teams that consistently deliver tangible value to merchants.

  • Business-Focused Engineering:
    Promote engineering practices that are aligned with business outcomes, ensuring teams remain focused on delivering merchant value.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    Drive close collaboration with design teams to create cohesive, user-friendly solutions that meet market demands.

  • Process Improvement:
    Establish and refine best practices for Agile and DevOps workflows across the engineering teams.

  • Coaching & Development:
    Act as a mentor to first-level engineering managers, helping them evolve into strong leaders who drive results and empower their teams.


Key Requirements

  • Leadership Experience:
    Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or Director, with several years managing engineering managers and leading large teams (40+ individuals).

  • Technical Proficiency:
    A strong affinity with full-stack development, encompassing both frontend and backend systems.

  • Product-Led Mindset:
    Demonstrated experience in a product-led environment, with a proven track record of building strong delivery teams.

  • Agile & DevOps Expertise:
    Solid knowledge of Agile and DevOps principles, with a successful history of implementing these methodologies in engineering teams.

  • Coaching Skills:
    Excellent mentoring abilities to develop leadership within the engineering management team.

  • Innovative Perspective:
    A non-traditional, refreshing approach with a business-focused mindset and the ability to align technical teams to deliver substantial business value.
