5 Ways to Narrow Your Job Search in Tech

Choosing your next career move is a milestone decision. However, with the pandemic largely reshaping hiring processes, the competitive nature of roles are at an all time high. Moreover, in addition to identifying available opportunities, it’s equally important to stay true to your interests, skills and passions. To make your job-hunt successful, we’ve put together our top strategies to narrow down your search when it comes to identifying your next tech opportunity . Read ahead!

  1. Make a List of Companies You’d Like to Work for and get connecting

Especially in tech, identifying the right fit amongst a plethora of opportunities can prove to be challenging. Develop a list of potential employers that draw your attention, and find someone from the hiring team to send your resume to. Ideally, this should be someone who is recruiting for the desired position. If this isn’t a possibility, reach out to one of the team members, and request them to connect you with you with the appropriate person.

  1. Network! Don’t limit yourself to online searches

While it may seem instinctive to use job boards as your primary portal when searching for career opportunities, never underestimate the power of effective networking. Meeting interesting people from within your field is a great way to hear about word-of-mouth opportunities, recent openings, and insider information. A great number of jobs aren’t posted publicly, and if you’re strictly relying on publicly posted ads, you’re missing out on a chunk of opportunities.

  1. Make sure to complete that LinkedIn profile

Considering more than 90% of recruiters use LinkedIn as their primary search tool, both in and out of the tech industry — using the platform to your advantage can go a long way. In addition to ensuring visibility within your professional network, the major way LinkedIn proves useful is its ability to streamline your search experience. Through features like location, connection degree and current companies, the platform is able to guide your search by predicting what you’re looking for. Make sure to pay special attention to your profile headline (shown in search results for LinkedIn and Google) in addition to a strong and effective summary.

  1. Ask questions to eliminate options

In addition to tools and platforms, it’s also important to ask yourself some crucial questions that will equip you with more clarity when it comes to the kind of opportunities you’d like to narrow down. Answer these questions: what would you do even if you weren’t getting paid for doing it? What kind of work environment do you see yourself in? and/or what kind of team is most suited to your professional development? Taking some time to reflect on the answers to these questions will help you take a lot of options off your plate, and allow you to focus on what’s really important to you.

  1. Rely on your personal and professional values to guide you

Last but not least, aligning your career goals with your personal and professional values can prove to be crucial when navigating your next opportunity. Not only can it bring a sense of job satisfaction and less stress, but when both of these are in sync, it also enables you to choose a career path that supports your value system. Moreover, by picking a path that will allow you to capitalise on your core strengths, you’ll find meaningful work that will allow you to experience both personal and professional fulfilment.
