Cybercrime is not a joke, Jim! Millions of companies and people suffer every year….

Cybersecurity in 2023

Whilst the accessibility of online resources paved the way for many industries like fintech, e-commerce and SaaS to expand globally and rapidly, not all people are good on the internet. Believe it or not, hackers don’t wear hoodies and V for Vendetta masks. Some of them might be teenagers who are sitting in their bedrooms wearing pjs.

The birth of cybersecurity has been fueled by the explosive growth of the internet. When the number of users and websites started to experience an immersive growth, data protection and liability of the internet drastically declined. Any online platform that collects data from their users became a haven for hackers and cybercriminals.

In the most simple way, cybersecurity can be defined as the implementation of measures to protect systems, networks, and software from cyber attacks, ensuring their protection against unauthorized access or disruptions. Besides financial frauds and threats like identity theft they also have the potential to cause nationwide or worldwide threats depending on the scope of data leakage. Therefore, cybercrime is not a joke and it has quickly become a top-level security priority across the globe…

4 Types of cyber attacks

The 4 popular types of cyber attacks are phishing, social engineering, ransomware and malware.

  1. Phishing is known as the most common type of cyber attack. The goal is to trick the users into giving away sensitive information such as credit card numbers and login details by sending fake emails that look like they’re from trustworthy sources.
  2. Social engineering tricks users into revealing sensitive information or granting access to malicious actors. It combines with other threats to make you more likely to click on harmful links, download malware, or trust deceptive sources.
  3. Ransomware aims to extort money by locking up your files or computer system until you pay a ransom. However, there’s no guarantee that paying the ransom will get your files back or restore your system.
  4. Last but not least, malware refers to software specifically created to gain unauthorised access or cause harm to a computer system.

Cybersecurity challenges for fintech companies

Even if you have the necessary experts in your team with the knowledge of FinTech security requirements, building and growing a safe FinTech app is a tough, time-consuming, and, above all, very expensive process. If you don’t, your project is most likely to exceed the budget and time estimates.

Some of the most common cyber threats that fintech companies face are fraudulent transactions, extortion, denial of service attacks, and credit card fraud. The storage and accumulation of tons of data, most of them being very sensitive information about users, in fintech companies comes along with data ownership and digital identity management concerns.

How to find and hire talented people in cybersecurity?

After witnessing several data breaches in 2020, it is no surprise that the need for cybersecurity professionals has increased exponentially. However, the shortage of experts still remains an unresolved issue. Caroline Vignollet, SVP of Research and Development at OneSpan anticipates that the cybersecurity talent gap will continue to be a persistent challenge in 2023.

Nevertheless, the area is still a demanding yet rewarding career path for many people from various backgrounds. Since it is a growing industry that people can easily penetrate into, it welcomes professionals with diverse experiences and backgrounds, such as engineering, compliance, sales, project management or business development. Besides private companies with attractive salary packages, many governmental institutions also seek professionals in the area.

Companies often require a combination of technical and soft skills to consistently enhance their cybersecurity capabilities. The ability to adapt, which is inherent in this blend of skills, is vital in the cybersecurity industry. Even though an individual may excel in a specific area, they will inevitably be tasked with new responsibilities as technologies evolve.

Working with cybersecurity recruiters

The main issue that contributes to the security gap remains the same. There is a growing need for cybersecurity as the threat landscape evolves, with attacks becoming harder to detect and defend against. However, the pool of potential workers is not keeping up with this demand, mostly due to a lack of interest among young individuals entering the job market.

Therefore, in order to reach out to a wider talent pool and fasten the hiring process for cybersecurity roles, working with third-party recruiters with cybersecurity expertise is crucial. PCN has been working with cybersecurity experts for over 15 years with a huge pool of professionals coming from different backgrounds.
